Differences between an Australian Cobberdog and an Australian Labradoodle

Is a Cobberdog the same as an Australian Labradoodle?

Although not (yet) recognized as an official breed, the name "Australian Labradoodle" has been known for several years. "Australian Labradoodle" means a cheerful, curly dog, created from a beautiful combination of several parent breeds (Labrador Retriever, Poodle, English and American Cocker Spaniel, IrishWater Spaniel and Curly Coated Retriever). There are three leading breeding associations: Australian Labradoodle Association America (ALAA), Australian Labradoodle Association (ALA) and Australian Labradoodle Association Europe (ALAEU), who use the name Australian Labradoodle with pride. The associations operate in their respective regions, with WALA being the most international and currently leading.

For some time, the name Cobberdog has been introduced as an alternative to the Australian Labradoodle. This is quite confusing for new dog owners and potential new dog owners. We are talking about genetically very similar dogs, whose beginning is the same. Two extraordinary, incredible and beautiful dogs. Both races are regulated by their respective associations, they are two wonders, being, let's be honest, practically impossible to differentiate, precisely because they are so similar.

What is a Cobberdog and what is the difference to an Australian Labradoodle?

According to ALEU's differentiation, a Cobberdog can actually look like the same wine in a new bottle. They have largely the same pedigree as the Australian Labradoodle. Some breeders, not affiliated with ALAA, ALA, and ALAEU, believe that the Cobberdog name would be an improvement over the Australian Labradoodle name. It is also stated that the official recognition of the breed could be made shortly under the name Cobberdog in Australia with the MDBA organization. ALAEU likes to point out that the only global operating organization that can recognize official breeds is the FCI. At this time, this is not happening for either the Australian Labradoodle or the Cobberdog.

There is one main difference between the Cobberdog and the Australian Labradoodle and it is the Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier, which is allowed in the pedigree of a Cobberdog. The ALAA, ALAEU and ALA do not allow a Wheaten Terrier in the pedigree of an Australian Labradoodle, because they believe that the Wheaten Terrier's character is not a positive addition to the Australian Labradoodle. Without an Irish Softcoated Wheaten Terrier anywhere in the pedigree of a Cobberdog (in all generations as far as we can find), the Cobberdog and Australian Labradoodle are the same.
